Un projet de création et de médiation réalisé en collaboration avec le centre d’artistes Verticale & la Bibliothèque multiculturelle de Laval

Invité par le centre d’artistes Verticale à investir le Studio – espace numérique de la Bibliothèque Multiculturelle de Laval au cours des mois d’octobre et de novembre 2018, Galerie Galerie s’est engagée à faire valoir la création en ligne auprès des citoyen.ne.s lavallois.es à travers un programme d’ateliers de GIF animés. L’oeuvre en ligne Grosses données lavalloises, fruit de cette rencontre, appréhende à la manière d’une « collecte d’informations » la communauté lavalloise sous une forme virtuelle inusitée.
Depuis les dernières années, l’explosion de la donnée numérique comme outil de recensement contraint au renouvellement des manières de voir et d’analyser le monde, entraînant par le fait même de nouvelles perspectives quant à la collecte, à la recherche, au partage, à l’analyse et à la visualisation des informations tant qualitatives que quantitatives recueillies.
Partant de cette constatation, Galerie Galerie s’est à la fois inspirée et dissociée de ces stratégies statistiques, dans l’intention de dresser un portrait très subjectif et non exhaustif des lavallois.es, mais surtout, afin d’en souligner le côté éclectique et unique.
L’oeuvre en ligne Grosses données lavalloises, laquelle adopte une forme et une esthétique à l’image des « Big Data », permet, grâce à cette mimétique, à la fois la subversion des procédés analytiques normalement appréhendés et la présentation d’un véritable portrait insolite de cette communauté distincte. En effet, loin de l’ampleur ou de la rigidité commerciale et consumériste des Datas traditionnels, le projet tend plutôt à une approche intimiste et subjective des lavallois.es. D’abord, par une collecte d’informations axée sur le processus créatif, très personnel et DIY des participants.tes et d’un autre côté, par la navigation web proposée qui, instinctive et ludique, cherche à amener le public à repenser ses perceptions des individus qui habitent le territoire de Laval.
Ainsi, si les ateliers avaient comme mandat d’initier les participants.es à la réflexion et à la création numérique et web, l’oeuvre, elle, cherche à amener les visiteurs à traiter les données créatives pour en tirer un sens renouvelé et exponentiel. Car bien que le territoire lavallois puisse être synonyme de banlieue et de développement commercial, il importe d’en considérer et de souligner sa richesse et sa diversité culturelle. Pour Galerie Galerie, ces deux mois de résidence ont permis des rencontres inattendues et surtout, un partage mutuel qui ne peut être dénombré.

Invited by the artist-run centre Verticale to invest the Studio – digital space of the Bibliothèque Multiculturelle de Laval during the months of October and November 2018, Galerie Galerie is committed to promoting online creation among Laval citizens through a program of animated GIF workshops. The online work Grosses données lavalloises, the result of this meeting, is a « collection of information » about the Laval community in an unusual virtual form.
In recent years, the explosion of digital data as a census tool has forced a renewal of ways of seeing and analyzing the world, leading to new perspectives on the collection, research, sharing, analysis and visualization of both qualitative and quantitative information collected.
Based on this observation, Galerie Galerie has both drawn inspiration from and dissociated itself from these statistical strategies, with the intention of painting a highly subjective and non-exhaustive portrait of lavallois.es, but above all, to highlight its eclectic and unique side.
The online work Grosses données lavalloises, which adopts a form and aesthetic in the image of the « Big Data », allows, thanks to this mimetic, both the subversion of normally apprehended analytical procedures and the presentation of a truly unusual portrait of this distinct community. Indeed, far from the scale or commercial and consumerist rigidity of traditional Datas, the project tends rather towards an intimate and subjective approach to the Laval people. Firstly, through information gathering focused on the creative, highly personal and DIY process of the participants and, on the other hand, through the proposed web navigation which, instinctive and playful, seeks to lead the public to rethink its perceptions of the individuals who live in the Laval territory.
Thus, if the mandate of the workshops was to introduce participants to digital and web thinking and creation, the work itself seeks to bring visitors to process creative data in order to draw a renewed and exponential meaning from it. Although Laval’s territory may be synonymous with suburbia and commercial development, it is important to consider and highlight its cultural richness and diversity. For Galerie Galerie, these two months of residency allowed for unexpected encounters and, above all, a mutual sharing that cannot be counted.
